Sumit Bothra is a music manager. He is a Managing Director of ATC Management's European Music Operations, a board member of the UK's Music Manager's Forum (MMF), and the manager of artists like PJ Harvey, Fink, Katie Melua, Nathan Nicholson, Tom King, The Boxer Rebellion and more.
Sumit's road to music biz establishment was 'non-traditional'. From the Hindi a-capella group "Penn Masala" he founded between 1995 and 1998, studying engineering with a plan to become a robotics expert to simply helping out a musician friend with no audience and taking their career to extraordinary heights, his road was a mix of opportunity, persistence and ingenuity. He attended Ashville College in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England between 1988 and 1993, and Woodberry Forest School between 1993 and 1995.
Sumit began working within the music industry while still at university. He began his career in 1996 while at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, which he attended between 1995 and 1999, as a College Marketing Representative for Virgin Records of America. At that time he was responsible for promoting their artists through a vast network of college/university publications and radio stations across the states of New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
In 1998 Paul Burger (then CEO of Sony Music UK) invited Bothra to set-up the UK's first bona fide College Marketing Department within a European major, which he started in 1999. While at Sony Music UK in London, Bothra also set up Blue Elephant Music, a joint-venture with Sony Music India, which sold over 500,000 records during its first two years in operation against all expectations. Bothra parted ways with Sony Music in 2002.
In 2003 Sumit founded Embargo Management to manage the highly regarded recording artist and film composer, Nitin Sawhney. He then extended his roster to include bands and began overseeing the careers of Fink and The Boxer Rebellion. He led The Boxer Rebellion to become the first unsigned band in history to enter the Billboard 200 Albums Chart on a purely digital release. He worked independently as a manager until September 2010.
Following his years as a successful independent manager, Sumit joined ATC in 2009, and was promoted to Managing Director in 2021. In his role as Managing Director, Sumit is the primary contact for ATC's community of over 15 European-based managers and support staff.
Having started as a small collective of independent managers operating under one roof, ATC has grown over the past decade with offices now in London, Los Angeles, and Copenhagen. As well as managing recording artists, producers, songwriters, directors and composers, the company also books tours through its agency ATC Live, produces livestream events through subsidiary company Driift, and now also operates in the sync, brand partnerships and promotions sectors through a variety of strategic partnerships.
